CUTTACK: A contractual lineman of Tata Power Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) was electrocuted and his helper sustained injuries while restoring power supply in Asureswar section of Salipur division on Tuesday.

The deceased is Asutosh Mohanty of Nuagan within Nischintakoili police limits. Sources said Mohanty, employed as a lineman with TPCODL on subcontracting by Redtech Solution India Pvt Ltd, was bridging an 11 KV electric pole near Jhatia to restore power supply when the accident

Although the restoration work was carried out after the shutdown of the Asureswar power structure, the staff in charge had loaded the current without realizing the condition of the shutdown which led to the accident Mohanty was found hanging from the electric pole and was brought down after 15 minutes with the help of a rope. He was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. TPCODL Superintendent Engineer Debasish Patnaik said the postmortem report is awaited to determine the cause of death.

“TPCODL, which has ensured sufficient security measures, also imparted comprehensive behavioral training on SOPs, security practices and training to its staff. But they have not followed the security protocols. We are also conducting a security audit. would conduct an inquiry if the deceased had adhered to the safety protocol,” Patnaik said.

Meanwhile, following the incident, angry locals staged a road block on the Cuttack-Chandbali state highway in Katikata demanding an inquiry into the incident. They said that the junior manager of Asureswar electrical section is staying in Chandol instead of the headquarters for the last six years and the section is being run by a skeleton staff.

The dead were identified as Sukanti Behera of Jabalpur village within Harabhanga police limits, her brother-in-law Sushil and her son Sohan. Sources said Sukanti came in contact with a live wire while drying wet clothes at her home. As she screamed for help, Sushil and Sohan came to her rescue. However, they too were electrocuted. The neighbors then arrived at the house and cut off the electricity supply. They took the trio to Puruna Katak Community Health Centre. However, the doctors pronounced them dead. After the tragedy, a pall of sadness descended on the village of Jabalpur.
